Petra Kellner studied Industrial Design at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig and the HfG Offenbach, receiving her degree in 1978. In 1979 she received a DAAD scholarship (German Academic Exchange Service) for a year in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). From 1983-85 she worked  with Prof. Gui Bonsiepe in order to build up an institute for product development (LDPDI) in Floriánopolis, Brazil.

She also spent many years researching in the field of conceptual studies with Prof. Nick Roericht in Ulm and Berlin.  Since 1980 she had had various assistant professorships  and guest lecturing positions at different universities and since 1991 she has been Professor  at the HfG Offenbach in the Product Design Department (Foundation Course, Color in Design,  Intercultural Design Projects) In 2007 she started together with her colleague Georg-Christof Bertsch the International Design Platform Offenbach. From 1996-2006 she was a member of the DAAD scholarship selection committee „Art and Design“ and took part in international workshops and congresses on the subject of colour, e.g. in Taiwan, Cuba and Brazil.
