Reflecting waters • a topic for industrial design (since 2003)

Reflecting waters, which started in a desert, took us all the way to the Cumulus Global Water Workig Group which Georg established in Shanghai in 2010. Student and teachers's groups in Jerusalem, Delhi, Düsseldorf, Istanbul, Berlin, Paris, Denver have worked on diverse aspects of Reflecting Waters since 2005. In Offenbach we get deeper into complex systems questions on a regular basis.

"Wherever we may live, there is a water crisis emerging around us" says Alex Steffen, author of worldchanging, New York, 2006. We know that the upper 3 meters of seawater stores more warmth than the entire atmosphere of the planet. Our body consists by 70% out of water.

On the other hand there are water-tasks for designers everywhere we may look. New billion-Euro markets are being created, historical chancxes and opportunities are being offered to us. We don't even have to contemplate global dimensions – the smallest invention like a mechanical water pump for the African semi-deserts, an elegant water glass – or most simply, the observation of waves and surfaces of water, they all confront us with questions about the nature and the use of water in a future society.

No other element will so much dominate all of the public, political, economic discussions of the next years and decades. Water is the reason for the existence of life on Earth and its easy to dedicate more time and passion in exploring it. It's always a thrill.

self- sufficient systems of irrigation

The water consumption in rural sphere is most problematic and burds resource and environment in huge dimensions.- intelligent systematic solutions for water supply could make a very effective contribution.
Beside an illustrative description about set of difficulties and a survey of existing solutions, there will concepts/ products be developed for independent systems of irrigation.

Samoan view on water

A text about the Samoan perspective on political, cultural and social implications of the severe water-conflicts to come. Samoans have always lived in a water-world in direct and permanent exchange with salt and sweet water ressouces in Oceania. It is a crucial text for the understanding of indigenous reflections on today and future attitude toward water.
The text was proposed to IPPO by Dr.Tina Engels-Schwarzpaul. She is Professor at the Auckland  University, New Zealand and partner of the HfG-NZ-Co-operation.

Shower Pearls_ Creating a Sensual Experience in Public Swimming Pools

Swimming is a great recreational sport. However, most people do not know that they carry thousands of bacteria into the pool with them. To combat these bacteria most public swimming pools use chlorine to sanitize the water. Chlorine is very effective in this way, but its use can also be hazardous to ones health.
To minimize the use of chlorine in public swimming pools, it would be most effective for the swimmers to shower thouroughly before entering the pool, thus carrying less bacteria and dirt with them.
“Shower Pearls” is a concept to create a sensual shower experience before swimming. Taking a shower before you swim should be a given, but many people do not do so. The Shower Pearls consist of three shower modules, which one must go through before entering the pool.
They are geared towards three different shower experiences: one shower has massaging shower heads on each side, in another one experiences the sensations of a rain shower and the last is more of a fun shower, where the water comes from the bottom, an upside down shower.
The layout of the shower and locker rooms is such, that you can only enter the pool area by crossing through the Shower Pearls. In this way people must take a shower before swimming.

09.02.2008 17:10 OTHER Nico Albertus, Leonhard Klein – both are in the lucky position to combine different worlds in their biographies – the Asian and the European point of view. What Europeans sometime are puzzled with - a deeper understanding of the inner connections of culture an nature in Asian perceptions – made them think about how to illustrate the intrinsic powers of different waters in fresh cartoon-characters who symbolize river, lake, sea, source. We shall use these charters in the future as "speakers" of different water-habitats.
09.02.2008 17:02 OTHER Yanjun Qin, Jae-Young Kim, Alexandra Gryscyk – this group created what we proudly call a "realworld" intercultural project: a chinese-korean-german research and design project about bath-culture. Not only did they get deep into the coherence and differences of Asian and European bath-styles. They also came up with a fascinating cargo-container-system to install a public wellness/wellbeing bath-scape in any place you wish.
05.02.2008 19:39 OTHER Ayla Ertürk, Svantje Fenz – Muslim cleaning rituals before prayer require a series of activites. Ayla and Svantje undertook a journey into the heart of modern-time religious practises with the eyes of women on a severe problem for women: for men there exists a wide offer of places to clean themselves before prayer, for women there isn't. They came up with a stunning research, a beautiful and at the same time highly practical solution which opened our eyes much as it will open yours.
05.02.2008 19:32 OTHER Anna Seibel, Sebastian Reuthal – an almost archeological research took them into the fascinating world of 18th century salt-manufacturing devices converted into cure-systems for respiratory diseases in the 19th century. Until you see it, you won't believe how elegantly they catapulted this old-fashioned complex into our present time and created a breathtaking/free-breathing system for airports and other public spaces of the 21st century.
05.02.2008 19:24 OTHER Beyamin Kamm, Patrice Köbel, Christopher Prenzel, Benyamin Rahmani – this group of men-with-a-vision established a full scale water laboratory in our the seminar-room, gathering abundant information about water, shooting hundrets of brilliant photos and hours of footage on amazing water effects. But water sound, liquid sound was what they really got hooked up with in the end. They established a water-sound-/image-system you will have to listen to. It's a thrill!
05.02.2008 19:18 OTHER Sandra Schaus – if you take a closer look at how water management in a private household works today, you will find out fast, that only a minor part of fresh-water, rain-water, re-used-water, sewage water of different qualities is really being treated in an efficient way. Sandra's project reconsiders the entire system and proposes a smart offer for a modular solution.
05.02.2008 19:12 OTHER Ina Riedel – most drinking water is produced with non-sustainable methods or with high engergy cost. Here is a project which offers a real alternative: For an arid, waterless desert region in the mountains of Peru, Ina has developed an entire system for harvesting lots of cubic meters of fog-water, distributing it for agricultural use and developing sustainable settlements for poor peasants.
05.02.2008 19:06 OTHER Lisa Kelso – throughout her career as a professional swimmer she used to complain about water quality in public swimming pools. And how right she was! As a design student she did a profound research to open our eyes and she offers us a straightforward solution for remaking and remodeling entire public swimming-pools as eco-bathes.
05.02.2008 18:52 OTHER Sabrina Spee – Water is not just an element as others. Water seems to have a memory. Water interacts with human beings and its surroundings according to a series of strange laws. In order to first understand water and later design appropriate objects for water we have to research about the interaction of materials and water and the quality of the element itself.
